This Bohemian Style Shoulderbag (see pattern below) is another one of the patterns I created for Hobby Lobby a few years ago. These  were given as a free pattern to customers, hoping they would purchase the Hobby Lobby yarn I used to create the design. Really, you could use just about any yarn to make this purse, but keep in mind,  if you are a beginner, using a smaller weight yarn than this bulky yarn I used would make a smaller purse. Or if you want a larger bag than this, you could use extra bulky yarn or even work the pattern with 2 strands of yarn together.

This is a super easy beginner pattern, and the tassels make it fun! Actually it reminds me of the purses from the 70's. Or if you want to make it look more like a colorful "Hippie Bag", it would be cool to crochet each row (or round) in a different vibrant color!

I probably would not have chosen a fuzzy yarn for this, but I had to come up with designs using  yarns Hobby Lobby headquarters sent me. Most of the yarn they sent was furry or fuzzy. I figured they wanted to showcase yarns that weren't selling as well.

I did 7 designs for their tear sheets and at one time Hobby Lobby had all the free patterns online, but they no longer have those posted. So that's why I am adding the free pattern here. The bag is worked in the round, having less seams to sew. Hopefully you will
be able to print this pattern.

Purse with Bows - Free Crochet Pattern

This little girl's purse pattern was published in the crochet calender called Calender A Day. I'm sharing it here with you as a free pattern. It's a quick, simple and easy beginner pattern.  I'm sorry to say though, that the yarn I used is no longer available. It was a JoAnn Fabrics yarn that was so cool! Almost rubbery! So it did have some texture to it and was more like a bulky yarn. You could use any yarn you want to, but the thicker the yarn, the larger the purse will be. You could even double your yarn.

Materials

Finished Size - 5¼" x 4¼"

JoAnn Sensations Oceania yarn in Primary or any other # 6 super bulky yarn
Crochet hook size Yarn needle
Approx. 2/3 yd 1” wide yellow satin ribbon
Gauge
2 sc and 2 rows = 1 1/8”
Bottom
Row 1: Ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across, ch 1, turn – 12 sc
Row 2: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn, do not end off – 12 sc
Sides – worked in rnds

Rnd 1: Work scs around entire edge of bottom piece, increasing 2 sc on each end, and
only 1 sc in each corner, do not turn – 28 sc
Cont working in rnds without joining until piece is 4 1/2” tall, end off and weave in all
loose ends.
Strap
Attach yarn to fold at side edge, ch 28, attach to other side at fold. Tie ribbon into 2
bows, and sew to purse with sewing needle and thread.

Another accessory from Colorful Crochet Lace I want to share is the Daytime in Paris Sholder Bag. Pattern is for 2 sizes - the one shown in the picture and a much larger bag/carry-on. Bag is double lined with stabilizer but is optional. The leather straps were purchased at JoAnns. I love texture and used popcorn stitches in this bag. If you do not want to make the popcorn stitches you can easily work a DC cluster in place of each popcorn.

La Fleur Doily Bag from Colorful Crochet Lace

4th project in Colorful Crochet Lace I want to feature is the La Fleur Doily Bag. It's one of my favorites and is so much simplier to make than it looks. I've grown to love the pineapple stitch design and wanted to showcase it here. I wrote the pattern in 2 sizes. This size and a much larger bag!

My Bag in Vogue Knitting Crochet 2013!

I said I'd post a photo of my bag design today, so for the ones who haven't seen it, Ta Da!

My tasseled bag (titled Drawstring Bag in the book) measures 15" tall x 11" wide. It has a double lining, so the right side of the lining shows from the outside but also from the inside. Actually the outside that's showing is a light teal color, and the inside fabric is brown with small teal swirls. I added a pocket on the inside. Even though I suggested to the publisher I thought the bag would look good in ivory, I plan to make my own bag  soon in a different color. I'm thinking of a darker taupe, a dark sage green or maybe even a plum. They chose a wool yarn, but I'm going to make mine in a thick, sturdy cotton, and will add more pockets. You can never have too many pockets!

Sun and Sand Crochet Tote Bag - Tutorial to Make Rings from Plastic Tubing

How to Make Round Plastic Rings from Tubing at Lowes

The Sun and Sand Tote is my original design which was in a back issue of Crochet Today! magazine. When I first had this bag design in mind, I ordered metal rings online. But when they arrived in the mail, I decided the combination of 14 rings I needed would make the bag WAY too heavy. I had to get an extension because of being in the hospital for 16 days (having emergency surgery) and needed to come up with a quick solution. Actually, a friend was visiting me in the hospital when we both came up with the idea for making rings out of tubing. I had IV's in me with tubing everywhere! Putting these rings together was very easy and inexpensive! There was no room in the magazine to put the tutorial for the rings, so they put the instructions on their website. Double Breasted Jacket Purse

This has been a popular pattern in Positively Crochet and whenever I carry this purse it gets lots of attention! People always comment on it. Maybe it's because of the color combination or the style. I used a sturdy 100% nylon cord (with a gorgeous sheen) but you could use any yarn for this pattern. Of course using a sturdier cord such as this helps to give the purse shape.

I also added a lining and a sturdy stabilizer, which can be found at fabric shops such as Joanns or Hancocks. Just look for the thickest, most firm pelon called Peltex.

I normally am a loose crocheter, but when making a purse or tote bag, you want to work as tightly as you can, unless it's a lacy, open weave design. Nylon cord is a little slippery, so you'll want to use "Liquid Stitch" or "OK To Wash It" when weaving in your ends.

(formerly crochetstyleetc.com) Mona is a very nice friend of mine and you'll love browsing her site for exciting yarns, cords and threads at great prices! The page for this nylon cord is HERE. This is the cord that used to be called Omega Hilos. Hobby Lobby also carries it but they have only a few colors.

Of course you can make this in one of your favorite colors but hot pink is hot, hot, hot right now!

Earth Friendly Tote - Market Bag in Crochet Today! Magazine

I just wish you could see the stitch pattern up close on this market bag. It has raised popcorn stitches all over the bag. The stitch pattern is pretty easy but this is not a real quick project. The result is worth it though. They had me use Eco Ways Yarn, the recycled cotton yarn from Coats and Clark.

Sun and Sand Tote - Beach Bag in Crochet Today! Magazine

This tote was published in the July/August 2009 issue of Crochet Today! Magazine. I had to have emergency surgery on my ripped esophagus and was in the hospital for 16 days about the time this beach bag was due. I had planned to use metal rings, but they were way too heavy. Then I looked for plastic rings, but they were too thick. When I was in the hospital, on Morphine, and wondering what I was going to use for the rings, a friend looked at the tubing used for my IV's and suggested I look for plastic tubing at Lowe's and that's exactly what I did! It was inexpensive and pretty easy to cut and put together. Crochet Today magazine put my instructions on how to do the rings on their website, but it's no longer there, so I'm posting those instructions below. I really enjoyed designing this bag!

Hilos 100% Nylon cord, # 18, in Var. Confet - color # 57 (7 oz. spool)

Tapestry needle

21 small glass beads

1/2" piece of velcro

  

Gauge

with F hook - 6 sc = 1 1/4"     with E hook - 5 sc = 1"

4 sc rows = 1"

Instructions -Worked in the round

Rnd 1: Ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 20 sc. Do not turn, do not ch 1, continuing up other side, sc in each ch - 20 sc  (40 total sc on rnd) If you want holder to curve in at the top sides, as in photo, change to size E hook at about rnd 8, otherwise, continue using F hook.

Cont working scs around for 15 rnds, end off.

Front Round Closure

Ch 2, 7 sc in 1st ch, join with sl st to 1st sc, ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around.  Sl st to 1st sc - 14 sc, end off

Tab

Row 1: Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn - 4 sc

Rows 2 - 3: Rep row 1, end off.

Finishing

With right sides together, sew tab to center back of holder with cord and yarn needle. Then sew other end of tab to round front closure in same manner. Weave in all loose ends.

Add 20 beads with sewing needle and thread to outside edge of round closure. Sew 1 bead to center hole on circle.  Place velcro to right side of holder, and to underside of round closure.
