Looking For A Pattern You Can't Find?

Have there been patterns or designs in crochet that you've had trouble finding? I enjoy designing patterns that are in demand but hard to find. The fact that crochet has soared in popularity the past 9 years, has made it easier with the many new designers out there writing and selling patterns. People don't have to wait to write a book. They can sell their patterns on the internet through their blog, Ravelry, Etsy or Craftsy. It's even possible to immediately post free patterns on our blogs and other craft related websites.

I am a member of Pinterest and am amazed at how many people there are out there crocheting and writing their own patterns (aside from books) And just think about Ravelry, Etsy, Crochetville, Craftsy, and all the yarn companies offering free patterns. They are unlimited! Some of those yarn companies that come to mind are Red Heart Yarns, Berroco, Lion Brand Yarns, Knit Picks, Patons, Bernat, Crystal Palace, Classic Elite, and many others too numerous to mention.

There's just got to be some things or styles in crochet that are difficult to find! If you have any ideas, would you please let me know? I am doing a book proposal and have a specific type of crochet book in mind (I'm excited about) but it would really help me to know what other crocheters think is in demand right now, but are having a hard time finding.

You know what's funny? Some of the designs in my books I thought would be a hit or the most popular are actually not the most popular. And what's crazy is that some of the patterns I thought wouldn't go over that big are some of the most popular of all! It's amazing to me, and that helps me to decide what types of patterns to write or not to write.

One of my passions is to help make things easier for crocheters. That's why I work very hard to write my patterns so they are easy to understand. I get lots of emails, and especially the reviews of my books say that my patterns are very easy to follow. When I write patterns I'm always thinking about how I can make each and every phrase understandable. Rewording a sentence can make a world of difference, as I'm sure some of you know.

50 Patterns (garments and accessories)
When I wrote Positively Crochet, I wanted to have at least 50-60 patterns in that book, so people would feel like they got more for their

money, and it paid off.  It has been
one of the most popular crochet books around. Most publishers and designers want 20-25 patterns in a book. I'm the kind of person who believes strongly in the quote, "The more you give, the more you receive." And I don't mean for that to sound like I just want more, so I give more. I really do genuinely care about people and try to make their life easier.

It was really exciting for me to come up with a way to make fitted, flattering crochet garments and accessories without having to go to the trouble of using increases or decreases in my book, Crochet That Fits. I came up with the new term Graduated Stitch Method, which is what makes this so incredibly easy! People all over the world write and praise me for coming up with this method because they are making garments for the first time in their lives. Many of the 5* reviews you can read on Amazon talk so much about my new method of crocheting and say it has changed their lives! Do you know how rewarding that is for me to hear those things? Makes me want to continue. Don't forget to let me know if you have any ideas for hard to find patterns!

  1. Hi Mary Jane, I know you posted this about a month ago and asked if anyone had patterns that they couldn't find. I would love to find a book with really trendy hand bags. Not totes. I have found a few here or there. Typically where I good ones are vintage. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

    Hope this inspires some ideas.
    Happy designing!!

    1. Hi Rhonda!
I see that you wrote this post a long time ago and I'm sorry that i'm just now seeing it! The comments from my blog go to a separate folder in my email & somehow I missed some. So sorry, but thanks for your comment!I love designing handbags. Have you seen the 2 in my latest book, Colorful Crochet Lace? Please check them out on my Ravelry designer page. I also had a trendy bag with tassels published in one of the Vogue Knitting Crochet magazine from either 2013 or 2014, I believe. They may be here on my blog. I'm way behind posting my designs here.
      Thanks!

    1. Hi La Guyana!
In so sorry that I'm just now seeing your question. The pattern for that necklace is in my book, Positively Crochet, which is out of print, but you can find it on Amazon or eBay. It's worth the money because there are 50 patterns in that book. Some garments but many accessories. There are scarves, purses, handbags, slippers, belts, shrugs, sweaters, tops, a skirt overlay, vest, some children's items, jewelry & more :) you can check them all it in my Ravelry Designer page.
Thanks for asking! Glad you like my necklace!
