Free Crochet Sock Pattern for Beginners

Free Beginner Crochet Sock Pattern by Mary Jane Hall

Update: please see my notes at the end of this post before making the socks. It is very important.

The sock pattern I have written is for women's sizes 4-12 (shoe size) and men's shoe sizes 6-14. There are several pages to this pattern because I wanted to explain my Graduated Stitch Method of making shaped garments and accessories without using increases or decreases. I talk about how I introduced this method in Crochet That Fits and give lots of tips and have several photos as well, making the pattern easy to undrstand. Don't allow the number of pages to scare you! This is a beginner pattern and I want to be clear on the instructions. I think it will be pretty awesome for those who have always thought socks would be way too difficult to do.  I'm excited to hear your feedback and by all means please post a photo of your finished socks on Ravelry and connect to me as the designer.

Important Notes you need to know before making the socks

Ignore the numbers at the end of row 1 (after it says "turn". That is not another row. I'm simply stating how many stitches you should have on that row. I should have just stated "155 total stitches on Row 1" or whatever the number is. It's been confusing to some people. I can only find my PDF copy and can't edit that, so have been looking for my original pattern for the socks. In the meantime just ignore the numbers at the end of each row and everything should be ok. Sorry if it confused anyone. I was really trying to make it easier for beginners, but it ended up confusing even more experienced crocheters. Just a note for in the future - when there is a dash and numbers at the end of a row (with any crochet pattern) that is the "total" number of stitches in that row.

I will also remind everyone that I am giving you permission to make and sell your finished product, but if you do sell anything of mine on etsy, craftsy, ebay, revelry, your blog, or any other place, you need to mention my name as the designer, so I will get the credit. Mentioning my name helps to promote me and my designs/books, therefore helping my income. There are people at the moment selling projects from my designs and have not mentioned my name, which makes it look like they are the designer. This is hurtful and just not right.

Also, remember that it is illegal to post my written pattern on the internet, so please be mindful of this. People have found my entire written patterns that are in my books, posted on websites in other countries and the publisher has had to contact them. This takes away sales from the book and has been a problem for other designers as well.

Thank you all for understanding and for being patient!

  3. Mine doesn't look right...
    medium size
    row 2
    last step reads 69 Hdc
    should it be 44 Hdc?

  4. Also
Mine doesn't pull in, like on the pictures.
Pattern doesn't say, but should I
be changing to an E hook for all groups of 10 sc?

  5. For me, the key to this pattern was using the correct yarn (any sock yarn) and stitching it properly. The photos are a huge help, and I should have both socks done by the end of this week.Unlike most sock patterns, you can get a custom fit because they are crocheted sideways!

  7. I'm a little confused by the pattern. Row 3 is reading the exact same as row 2. I would assume it should be the opposite (more like row 1) (hdc 38, sc 10, hdc 34, sc 10, hdc 63). Or is the pattern correct which would make the sc end up in different place every other row? Please clarify.

I should have just stated "155 total stitches on Row 1" or whatever the number is.I've been trying to edit that out (even tho it's required by publishers) bc it's been confusing to some people. I can only find my PDF copy and can't edit that, so have been looking for my original pattern for the socks. I just haven't found it yet, but if I accidentally deleted that, I'll just have to purchase Adobe Acrobat that will let me edit a pdf. It's not cheapo so I'm trying to avoid doing that. 9. I didn't have a problem with Row 3 reading the same as Row 2--when I aligned the two sides, it matched up as shown in the photos. I found it all came together when it was time to sew up the socks.

  10. Thanks for checking your notes on this Kathy. After "unknown" mentioned what she did about rows 1-3, it looked to me like she was right. I just might have to work up a sock myself again. I'm confused with my own pattern! It's not easy to try and understand my own patterns unless I make them again. Thanks for your comments!

  13. If you look toward the end of the post it says "The downloadable PDF pattern form is here. The word "here" is in red. Just touch that word in red and the pattern will come up.
This is right before where it says "Posted by Mary Jane Hall".

    1. Hello Mary Jane,
I have touched the “here” as you have mentioned above and unfortunately it takes me to a google drive that denies me access (probably because I’m not you). I don’t know if the fact that I have my own google drive is causing this issue. Anyway, it is preventing me from accessing and viewing the pattern. Any suggestions? Do you think this is due to how it is being shared via google drive?

    2. Hi Beth,
Did you contact me about this through email before? Someone else did and it just looked suspicious to me. I clicked on "here" in this post, and had no problem accessing the pattern. So I wrote that person back and told her that. I also asked her if she could contact me thru Ravelry, but she never did. I thought it was spam. I'm not sure what's going on. For years people have been able to access this pattern. There are other things that don't seem right lately on my blog too. I can try to ask 1 of my son's for help & even look in the "help" section here. I'll do my best. I'm just getting over my 5th week off Covid and am really behind on everything, including a book that was due wks ago. I'll try to lol into it. So sorry.
