I read an article on the Crochet Me website about "Top Down Sweaters" , written by editor Toni Rexroat, and wanted to share that with you. I have made top down sweaters and personally agree with what the editor of Crochet Me wrote. It is easier than a sweater that's worked in the round or has a front and back with "set in" sleeves. Attaching your yarn to the yoke and crocheting the sleeves in the round is a breeze. The tan cardigan below seems like a good project to start with if you want to try this "Top Down" method. Especially since it's FREE! There are lots of projects from this pattern on Ravelry with photos of this sweater in many different colors and sizes.

One of my favorite designers is Doris Chan, because I absolutely love lace!
She specializes in lace garments and top down sweaters. I've met her and hung out with her several times at the Knit and Crochet Show (Chain Link) and TNNA. She's lots of fun and one of the nicest persons I know! I have all 3 of her books. The blue sweater below is also a FREE pattern using thread. Fishnet Sweater in Positively Crochet

If you want to try a quick and easy top down project, my Fishnet Sweater in Positively Crochet! (right) would be a great project. It should take you only a few hours, and is definitely a week-end project.

FlexibleFashions 's FREE pattern

The Fishnet Sweater calls for bulky yarn and a large hook. I also have instructions on how to make this for a child, using smaller yarn.
I did a Google search for "Top Down Sweaters", in case you want more patterns or info on this method. Click here to find more websites and blogs.

I do love this method, but I also have to say that I don't agree that it's the easiest way to crochet a fitted sweater. My new Graduated Stitch Method (featured in my book, Crochet That Fits) of making fitted, flattering sweaters without having to use increases or decreases, has the Top Down method beat! My method begins with the foundation chain at the side, which makes a perfect, custom fit. Even though there are specific sts and rows for sizes xs - 3x, if that particular size you made does not fit, all you have to do is add or delete rows. It's SO easy and stress free! This method has different stitch heights (graduated sts) on the same row. In fact on some of my designs, I have sc, hdc,dc, trc, and dtrc on the same row. Using the shorter and taller stitches is what shapes the garment without using increases and decreases. Your first reaction may be, "Oh, that could be confusing", but it's really not at all. In fact most of the designs (tops, sweaters, skirts, dresses, shrugs, scarves, hats) that I have made with this method are labeled "beginner" or "advanced beginner". People all over the world who have made only scarves, afghans or washcloths, because they were intimidated with incs or decs, are now making their own garments!

My Little Sister - Widow at a Young Age

I can hardly believe it's been over a month since I have posted on my blog! Is anybody still out there?

The holidays were just crazy and I'm finally starting to get things back to normal. You know how it is. I was privileged to have my little sister, Donnagay, visit me for 2 weeks.

We made cookies, candies, and
cooked Christmas dinner together. It was great having her here, catching up on things and making each other laugh. We sang some of the songs we used to perform while we were growing up in the south. We (the 3 Perry sisters) had a group called the Harmonettes, but later changed the name to the Harmony Folk Singers, because our brother, Richard, started singing with us. We sang at talent shows and won grand prize in everyone we entered, had our own radio show, and were regulars at a show called "Country Junction" every Saturday night. We sang folk songs and were the only group that didn't sing country, but we started adding country songs to our repertoire. Singing on a TV show in Tupelo, Mississippi was always fun too.

We also did our share of crying. She became a widow at age 37, several years ago, and this month is the 20th anniversary of her husband's death.With all the heartache I've been through the past 4 years, she's "here" for me just as I was there for her as her life was shattered into pieces.

After the tears, we had fun and even got to do some crocheting. It had been a while since my sister picked up a crochet hook, so she had to do some brushing up before starting a pair of my Slippers with Rose from Crochet That Fits.(my book that has shaped garments and accessories without having to use increases and decreases)

At first she didn't think she was experienced enough to make the slippers, but with a little coaxing I finally convinced her that it was a "beginner" project. (even though it doesn't look it.) I'll post pictures of her slippers in my next blog post. Maybe they will inspire you to make your own.

While we were growing up, I was like Donnagay's "second mama", and I carried her around everywhere and protected her like she was my own.

The bottom photo was taken in 1974, when I was pregnant with my daughter. We were so proud of our John Lennon glasses!

Snowman Cheese Ball Recipe - Wearing a Crochet Scarf!

It's that time of year when we're all looking for new recipes for holiday parties, so I want to share my Snowman Cheese Ball recipe with you. I made a little crochet scarf for him to wear and am posting the EASY pattern. Wouldn't your crochet group think this is the cutest appetizer?

Snowman Cheese Ball
Makes 16 servings—2 TB each. I doubled this recipe for the one in the photo.
1 container (8 oz) Cream Cheese)
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh chives or green onions
1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted
Ground cayenne red pepper to taste
1/4 cup 100% grated Parmesan Cheese
Peppercorns or whole allspice for eyes, mouth and buttons
1 baby carrot for nose (I had to cut it down)
2 stick pretzels for arms

1. Mix cream cheese, cheddar cheese, chives(or green onions) toasted almonds and red pepper untill well blended; cover. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight
2. Divide mixture into 3 different sized balls (1 small, 1 medium, and 1 large) Coat with Parmesan cheese. Arrange on serving platter in a line to resemble a snowman lying down. Decorate with peppercorns or allspice for eyes, mouth and buttons. Add carrot for the nose. (Note: you could also use raisins or cranberries (cut up) for the buttons, eyes etc).
Place pretzels on snowman for arms
3. Serve with crackers.

Tip: Crochet a little scarf to tie around snowman's neck or cut out a scarf with felt and cut ends for fringe. You can even buy a little black hat at most craft stores.

To make snowman's crochet scarf:
Row 1: With worsted wt yarn and a G or H hook, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, ch 1 turn - 2 sc
Row 2 - ???? -Sc in 1st 2 sc, ch 1, turn - 2 sc
Add fringe to ends of scarf
Sorry, I don't remember how many rows I did. I gave the scarf to my grandaughter for her dolls after we ate the snowman!

I like these big, bulky knits and wanted you to see them too! I wonder what size needles the designer used for the gold sweater? It probably took more than one person to do just 1 stitch!

Uhhhh, which planet are they from?

I think these styles were from last years runway shows, but you probably have seen how hot big cowls are now!

Some of these are a bit extreme and I wouldn't wear them, but I still like the way they look!

Earth Friendly Tote - Market Bag in Crochet Today! Magazine

I just wish you could see the stitch pattern up close on this market bag. It has raised popcorn stitches all over the bag. The stitch pattern is pretty easy but this is not a real quick project. The result is worth it though. They had me use Eco Ways Yarn, the recycled cotton yarn from Coats and Clark.

3 Designs in Sept 06' Issue of Crochet! Magazine

I started designing crochet wearables in 2005, and had 11 designs accepted by DRG that same year. The following 3 designs were actually not published in the magazine til Sept 06. Publishers already know at least 9 months before the publication date the patterns that will be in the magazine. Most magazines know now (Nov. 11') what designs will be in their holiday issue for 2012. These 3 designs were my first ever in a magazine. I know they aren't big items, but I started out with accessories, then in 2007 I started designing garments like sweaters, shrugs, skirts and tops.

This tote was published in the July/August 2009 issue of Crochet Today! Magazine. I had to have emergency surgery on my ripped esophagus and was in the hospital for 16 days about the time this beach bag was due. I had planned to use metal rings, but they were way too heavy. Then I looked for plastic rings, but they were too thick. When I was in the hospital, on Morphine, and wondering what I was going to use for the rings, a friend looked at the tubing used for my IV's and suggested I look for plastic tubing at Lowe's and that's exactly what I did! It was inexpensive and pretty easy to cut and put together. Crochet Today magazine put my instructions on how to do the rings on their website here. I really enjoyed designing this bag!

Thrift Store Find # 6 - Navy Chain Link Sweater

Once again, Mihaela Vaduva is modeling another one of my thrift store finds in crochet. It's a simple cotton, chain link sweater. There's a lining attached underneath making it even more wearable.
I have so much fun finding these treasures. There are many more out there but unfortunately I wouldn't be able to buy them all! I usually buy the ones I think are special or different.

Flower Scarf by Mary Jane Hall - Recently Published

Two Color Scarf by Mary Jane Hall - Recently Published

I'm excited to share a photo of one of my scarf designs that was recently published in a book called Go Crafty Crochet Accessories. In fact I have 2 scarf designs in this book. The first one is a scarf with small circles, not much bigger than a quarter, called the Two Color Scarf. The second design is a Lavender Flower Scarf with Dark Purple Trim. I will feature that scarf in a separate post. The publisher is Soho Publishing in New York City, which is the same publisher of Vogue Knitting and Knit Simple magazines. They also used to produce Crochet Today! magazine.

My artist daughter, Jamie Vaduva, did a sketch of a scarf with circles about 5 years ago and this year was the first time I submitted it to anyone. I really liked Jamie's color combination, which was more of a medium green and medium blue. After my submission was accepted, the editor wanted me to do the scarf in the light teal, and lime green, as pictured in the photo above. When she sent me the yarn, I didn't like the color combination at all, but as I made the scarf it started to grow on me. I really do like it now and hope you do too! Our local CGOA chapter hosted a very successful event, we called the "Crochet Gathering", in March 2010. They asked me, as well as Ellen Gormley of Cincinnati to be the guest speakers.

I demonstrated my new method of crocheting fitted and flattering crochet garments without having to use increases or decreases. I call this the Graduated Stitch Method, and that's what my book, Crochet That Fits is all about. The book has been very popular and in fact, it was voted "Best Crochet Pattern Book of 2008". I know it won because of my new method and the fact that people who have crocheted for years but only made afghans and washcloths are now making pretty garments for themselves.

This event was held at the Bergamo Center in Beavercreek, Oh. (a suburb of Dayton) We had a fun time with door prizes, lunch, and other talks and demonstrations. We all went home with goody bags full of yarn, patterns, etc. We had planned to make this a yearly event, but we had to skip doing it in 2011, because of busy schedules.

Cap Sleeve Top - One of my Most Popular Designs Ever

The Cap Sleeve Top has been my favorite design in Crochet That Fits from the start. It's fitted, flattering and a very easy garment to crochet. I like it because it's feminine with pretty lace edging and a flair at the bottom edge. Lots of people think this top is knitted. But one of the main reasons I believe this top is so popular is because it was featured on the Knit and Crochet Now TV Show, produced by Candi Jensen. (More about Candi here) I was able to decide which design I wanted to feature, using my Graduated Stitch Method, and it seemed like a good choice. Brett Bara was the host and Myra Wood demonstrated my method, step by step. with small swatches I had made for the show. She did a great job. If you are on Ravelry, you know that people can post photos of a project and link it to the designer. (see my page with many other designs here). I'd like to share some of those photos with you, so look below to see what other people have come up with.

It's interesting to see the different yarns, colors and sizes that other people have made. One creative lady, Donna (in the white top) made 3/4 length sleeves, and she told me she wears the top everywhere and gets lots of compliments. If you look to the left you will notice the different ways people have changed this pattern up a bit and I think it's brilliant. Notice the 2 with longer sleeves, one with no sleeves (like a tank top) and the longer tops, which is very easy to do.There's an explanation in the book on how to do this.

See how flattering this top is? It looks great on everyone, no matter what their size. (pattern is xs-3x) It's worked from side to side, and has stretch, for a perfect fit. Can you believe the skill level is Easy or Advanced Beginner?

Fastest Crocheter Contest - I won!

Can't believe it's been 4 years ago, but the ladies in our local CGOA coaxed me into entering the fastest crocheter contest. You see, I said they "coaxed me" because I do not crochet fast. I prefer to work at a leisurely pace unless I'm working on a design for a deadline. Even though it's my work, I still want to enjoy what I'm doing and I'd be a nervous wreck if I had to go at a really fast pace all the time.

Don't let this certificate fool you! I'm probably not half as fast as Lisa Gentry or Lilly Chin! I'll have to ask Lisa how many stitches she did in 5 minutes to win the title of "Fastest Crocheter in the World"!! (Guinness Book of World Records)

Anyway, since we only had around 10 people there that night, it was difficult to get the 6 or 7 of us to agree to entering the contest. I decided to go all out and give it a shot, and to my surprise, I won! Pam Frye, who had won all the previous years, probably felt sorry for me and allowed me to win. I don't know why I felt guilty, but maybe it's because I'm a professional crocheter? I have been crocheting for 42 years now, but some of the ladies have crocheted more often than I did through the years. I mostly made things for baby showers and Christmas gifts, until I started designing and actually making money from it. So now I do it just about every day!

Impossible Taco Pie - Free Recipe

If you've been cooking for any length of time, you have probably come across this pretty, but simple recipe. On the other hand, if you are fairly new to cooking, and your family likes Mexican food, you'll be surprised to know that this pie makes it's own crust. That's why it"s called Impossible Taco Pie. I found this recipe in a Bisquick cookbook, that also includes Impossible Bacon Pie, Impossible Lasagna Pie, Impossible Cheeseburger Pie, Impossible Quesadilla Pie, Impossible Green Bean Pie, Impossible Zucchini-Tomato Pie, Impossible Brunch Pie, Impossible Seafood Pie, Impossible Brownie Pie, Impossible Buttermilk Pie and Impossible Cheesecake. They are all equally as good. Scroll down below my photo to see the recipe.

I served the Taco Pie with a tossed salad, guacamole and Dorito chips

Impossible Taco Pie
1 pound ground beef                               1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup chopped onion                3/4 cup Bisquick baking mix
1 envelope (1 oz) taco                            3 eggs
seasoning mix                                     2 tomatoes, sliced
1 can (4 oz) chopped green                      1 cup shredded Monterery Jack
    chilies, drained                                         or Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup sliced black olives (optional)

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 10 inch Quiche or pie plate, 10" x1 1/2". Cook and stir beef and onion over medium heat until beef is browned; drain. Stir in seasoning mix. Spread in plate; sprinkle with chilies. Beat milk, baking mix and eggs until smooth, 15 seconds in blender on high or 1 minute with hand beater. (I used a whisk for easier cleanup). Pour into plate. (Note: if you like black olives and want to cook them inside the pie, this would be the time to place them on top of the mixture) Bake 25 minutes. Top with tomatoes; sprinkle with cheese. Bake until knife inserted in center comes out clean, 8 to 10 minutes longer. Cool 5 minutes. Serve with sour cream, chopped tomatoes, black olives and shredded lettuce.    6 - 8 servings

Crochet Then and Now - We've Come A Long Way Baby!

I found this black and white picture of Barbie wearing some hideous crochet outfits, in an old magazine, and was reminded of why some people in the past did not like crochet. I understand! I don't want to make fun of the person who designed this, and I'm sorry if it's you or your grandmother. But if the person had only used a small thread to make the clothes, wouldn't it have been much better? I just could not ever embarrass Barbie in this way. I can just hear her now saying "This dress makes me look so fat!" Or "I really don't want to be seen in public at the beach with this thick diaper on!" Poor Barbie, I'm afraid she's had to endure many unflattering garments over the years. She probably sobbingly said, "What were they thinking? Ken will never like me in this!" I believe, as you will too, that the standards of publishers and designers everywhere have skyrocketed since this old magazine was published. I found the aqua and white outfit in the customer gallery of Creative Yarn Source. (formerly Crochet Style, Etc) The outfit was made with Hilos Omega # 2 nylon thread and # 10 cotton by Barbara.

I was never privileged to have a Barbie doll when I was growing up, but my daughter had several and I excitedly made clothes for her Barbies. After I started designing, I had thoughts of doing a Crochet Barbie book, but Nicki Epstein beat me to it! She did a fabulous job and nothing could ever top what she did! I have always been impressed by Nicki and her designs, (both knit and crochet), and have most of her books.

I have always been the kind of designer who says, “What else can I do with this?” I love playing around with a crocheted piece and sometimes my mind just goes crazy. It all started with a design in Crochet That Fits, where I have 6 designs all from the same exact shape.
I didn’t start out planning to do the same with this cowl, but after it was finished, I was not satisfied with just one way to wear it!

As a skirt

My model, 24 yr old Mihaela Vaduva from Romania, so patiently allowed me to manipulate this cowl all over her body.

There are several ways you can wear this cowl, so it's really 7 patterns in one! They are:

1. As a Cowl - neck warmer
2. As a Hood - over your head
3. As a Capelet - around the shoulders
4. As a Skirt
5. As a Tube Top - to wear under a jacket
6. As a Tote Bag
7. As a Throw Pillow

As a Capelet

Of course, if you wear this piece as a skirt, you may need to weave in a chain tie through the waist to help keep it on your hips. And if you use the pattern as a tote bag, you'd need to crochet a rectangle shaped bottom, sew on handles, and add lining and a stabilizer to help keep its shape.

For those of you who are fairly new to crochet, you may look at the stitch pattern and think it looks complicated. But it’s not at all. Believe me, I try not to do real difficult patterns. If I can’t figure out a stitch pattern in a few minutes, I’m done with that one, and go on to try another. I am known to design easy patterns, and this textured cable and aran stitch won’t disappoint you. It’s not the quickest pattern, but well worth your time. The stunning texture resembles knitting from afar. BTW, I would never advise anyone to wear a crochet sweater, such as the one in the photos, with the crochet cowl. I had been taking pictures of Mihaela in crochet pieces I found at the thrift store and was in a hurry! I have started posting "Thrift Store Finds", so be sure to look up those photos here.


As a Tote Bag

Each piece you see in the photos is the exact same piece. (the original cowl) My model is a size 4-5, but as a skirt this would also fit a size 1-2.

If you need to make a larger size skirt or capelet, all you'd have to do is add more rows.
For the pillow at right, I sewed up one end, put a pillow form inside, then sewed up the other end on the outside.

Recipe - Deep Dish Taco Squares

SO yummy and tastes nothing like tacos

My friend, Shirley Siddall, gave me this recipe many yrs ago and I always wondered why it was called Taco Squares, since it has no chili powder in it and tastes nothing like tacos. I'm not crazy about taco flavoring, and I guess that's why I love this dish. It was one of my family's favorites so I decided to fix this for another family last night (first time in yrs) and remember why I love it so much. It's hearty and has all the ingredients I like. My recipe card is smeared with food and water making it barely readable. I'm sure you know how that is. So I decided to see if I could find the recipe on the web, since it's an old Bisquick recipe. Now I know why it's called Taco Squares. The original recipe has taco seasoning in the meat, but I still like it much better without the taco seasoning. I've added more cheese and black olives to my friend's recipe, and maybe you can come up with your own version.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2/3 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
1 cup sour cream (I added a little more sour cream and mayonnaise)
2 tablespoons chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
2 cups Biscuit baking mix(could use reduced fat)
1/2 cup cold water
2- 3 tomatoes, sliced
1/3 cup sliced black olives

Directions

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Cook and stir ground beef until brown; drain. While beef is cooking, grease oblong baking dish (13"x 9"x 2"). Mix sour cream, mayonnaise, and onion. Add 1 1/2 cups of the cheese, reserving 1/2 cup for the top.Set aside this mixture.
Mix baking mix and water, until soft dough forms. Pat in pan, pressing dough 1/2" up sides. (Note: Spreading the dough will be easier if you sprinkle a little baking mix on your fingers and on top of the dough, as you do this). Layer beef, sliced tomatoes and green pepper on top of dough that's in the pan. Spoon cream cheese mixture over top. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup cheese and black olives over sour cream mixture. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 25-35 minutes or until bottom crust is golden brown. (I cooked this for 35 minutes)
Serve with a tossed salad. I used Spicy Ranch Dressing with the salad and it goes well with the dish. Hope you enjoy it! Let me know if your family likes it.
Yield: 10-12 servings.

Isn't this lacy lavender sweater just gorgeous? As you can tell by now I love thrift store shopping. It's my passion! When I bought these beautiful crochet garments at some of my favorite stores, I was a size small and could fit into them, but I have gained some weight & now they are too small. I won't be this size for long though, as I'm starting to get control of my life. By the way, my new home is within a mile or two of my 3 favorite thrift stores :) Now how did that work out?

I'm finally getting settled in my home and feel like I've been away from this blog forever. Hopefully, even though I still have plenty of unpacking to do, you'll see me posting regularly from now on. As some of you know, it's been a very difficult year for me but I'm actually beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Please be patient with me as I get my boxes unpacked and decor on the walls. Everything still looks so bare! I found this article in the Talking Crochet! newsletter from a few weels ago, sent out by Editor, Carol Alexander. When I learned to crochet years ago, I learned how to hold my hook the "pencil" way. Some people hold their hook the "knife" way. Holding your hook either way is ok. It just all depends on what's the easiest or most comfortable way for you to hold it. Below are some facts about the "pencil" method of holding the hook, that I had no idea about.

Do you know why most crocheters in earlier eras held the crochet hook in their hand like a pencil? In the 1800s, this hand positioning was thought to be more feminine and graceful. Since I'm in transition right now, I haven't been able to post much on this blog. I wasn't able to move into my house and therefore had to put my things in storage. At the moment I'm staying with friends and they have said I could stay with them as long as I need to. That is a great feeling and gives me peace. In the meantime, I'll try to post now and then til I get moved and settled. Below is another short article in my designing series for up and coming designers.

Pattern Writing

I've had many people ask me questions on designing and how they can get started. This post will be the beginning of many more to come on this subject. First of all, if you don't know how to read a crochet pattern, you must learn how to do that! Start out by learning the terms and what they mean. I say this because there are many designers who started out making their own designs before they ever learned how to read a pattern.

If you do know how to read crochet patterns and want to have designs published professionally, one of the important things for you to know is to make sure your pattern is written similar to the way each publisher requests. This is very important, because they don't have time to do the work for you. You should use the same format as one of their patterns, and the same kind of wording. For instance, if you say on a purse pattern:

"Finished Measurements - Without handles",
if their wording on most of their published patterns is:
"Finished Measurements - Excluding handles", you'd want to change it. Either way of saying it is fine, but they just prefer their way of wording things.

Other examples are:
End off, end off yarn, fasten off, fasten off yarn. Like I said, any of these ways are correct, but you just need to know what each particular publisher prefers.

They want to make it as easy on their staff as possible. I've heard of publishers or editors turn down a good design because the person's pattern writing skills were not good. Even having the comas, semi colons, parentheses, etc. in the right places is important. And you should place the materials list in the same order that they do.
Each publisher is a little different. That's why I have to change my pattern format with each publisher.

If you are passionate about wanting to become a professional designer who has their patterns in books and magazines, but don't know how to write patterns, it's imperative that you start learning how to do this. You can either learn on your own, by studying the wording of patterns, or you can take a class on Pattern Writing at one of the many conferences that are held all over the country. Some of those events are Chain Link Conference (Knit and Crochet), TNNA (Needlework Association), Stitches East and Stitches West. You may actually find access to a pattern writing class online. It's worth the effort you put into this!

Carnation Chicken - Delicious & Easy Recipe

This is one of my favorite recipes and I've been making it for years! Your family will love it!

Carnation Chicken

3 - 3½ lbs frying chicken pieces (or boneless chicken pieces)

Flour for coating chicken pieces

½ stick (or ¼ cup) butter

1 ½ cups Carnation evaporated milk

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 cup grated process cheese (I use Velveeta)

1 tsp. salt

One-eighth tsp. pepper

Paprika

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Coat 3 - 3½ lbs frying chicken pieces (or boneless chicken tenders) with flour. Melt ¼ cup butter (½ stick) in pan. Arrange chicken, skins down in pan. Brown chicken about 15-20 minutes, turn, then brown about 20 minutes more. (til brown) Remove from oven.

Mix 1 ½ cups undiluted Carnation evaporated milk, 1 can of mushroom soup, 1 cup grated process cheese, 1 tsp salt, and one-eighth tsp pepper. Pour over chicken. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake about 20 minutes.

Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.

This is delicious and easy!

But it wasn’t until 2002, after moving to Greenpoint and teaching herself English by watching subtitled movies, that she picked up a crochet hook at the dollar store and her former hobby erupted into an obsession. Now an established artist—she’ll show at the Smithsonian in 2012—the 33-year-old Olek covers everything from mundane household objects to public sculptures to people in her loopy yarn confections. See someone riding the subway in a head-to-toe crocheted bodysuit? Chances are, he’s Olek’s latest canvas. Her largest installation to date is a fifteen-by-fourteen-foot studio apartment, wherein every wall, picture frame, television, and toilet is wrapped in its own custom sweater. Originally stitched in Olek’s own Park Slope apartment, the crocheted mini-universe is currently exhibiting at Christopher Henry Gallery in Nolita, where it will remain until May 28. The gallery’s assistant director, Jason LeBlond, confirms what you might have speculated about Olek, who is rarely spotted not wearing a crocheted cardigan or collar: “There is no separation between her art and her life.”

Flood Damage at my House! How I'm Coping in a Difficult Situation

I just wanted to post about damage at my house due to the heavy rains we've been having this past week. It's been awful and my insurance is not going to cover the damage, since they have declared it flood damage. I'm so upset about that. The picture below was taken after the water was gone. When the water was at it's highest, you could have litterly taken a swim!

I haven't been listening to the news, but I've heard that Beavercreek got the worst of the flooding in the Dayton, Oh. area. The other day the front and side streets around my house (on the corner) were under water. It looked like a lake was surrounding my home! Since my garage is underground, and the driveway goes down a hill into the garage, you can imagine what happened. The water had no place else to go, but into my lower level garage. The water was too much for the drain, and my sump pump quit working. What a mess!
The water in my garage was up to the top of my thighs, higher than the top of the metal chair that was sitting upright. A refrigerator that was plugged in and working is on it's side, and I've lost some newer tables and nice lawn chairs. (plus lots of other stuff) To top all that off, my car was in the garage and also flooded. It had to be taken to a carpet place where they could get the water out. My car is still at that shop being dried and cleaned out.

Since there was so much water, the fire dept. said it was a fire hazard (because of fuel oil and the electric heater being under water) and they had to call the electric company to turn off my power. I was without power for almost 3 days and lost some of the food in my refrigerator and freezer.

Alot of good that WET VAC did me!

I got some other bad news on top of all this, so needless to say, I've been stressed and overwhelmed. I've cried a lot too. I'm also in the middle of packing to move. That's one reason I haven't been posting much on my blog. I'm trying to hang in there but I just wanted anyone interested, to know I haven't abandoned you all! One day, I'll get my head above water!

How I've Been Coping with Trials the Past 3 Years

When we go through trials and negative things that happen in our lives, it's easy to want to give up and say "Why me?" There will always be ups and downs, but knowing that, doesn't always help to ease the stress and mental anguish we go through. If you've gone through similar circumstances that are beyond your control, maybe reading about my experiences can help you in some way. Below is a list of things that have helped me, since my husband left me for another woman, my house has been foreclosed on, I'm being evicted, my little sister is on Hospice, my mom (at age 89 & 1,000 miles away from me) is trying to recover from another major stroke and other sadness and heartache in my life.

1. There is almost ALWAYS someone else who has it harder than me, and are in a worse situation. I need to be thankful for the good and count my many blessings!

2. I need to be thankful for what I DO have. Don't focus on the things I've lost or I DON'T have.

3. When the mental or emotional pain of my situation overwhelms me, and I feel like I can barely even breath, I try to say, "Can I get through the next minute? Can I get through the next hour? Can I get through the next day?" If I focus on my circumstances and heartache, I fall apart and all I see is doom! So don't focus on anything you can't do ANYTHING about. Just do what you know you CAN do! We all have to have our little pity parties from time to time, but once we get over that, it's energizing to know there are some things we do have control over. Once I get started on the things I CAN do something about, I feel like I'm moving forward, instead of backwards. So take my advice and "Take ONE day at a time!" Try not to worry. As Abraham Lincoln's mother said, "Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but doesn't get you anywhere." SO true!

4. Thinking about the bad circumstances or negative things that have happened to you, can eat you up just like a cancer. Don't make yourself sicker than you already are. Stress will make you sick and will also make you feel and look older.

5. If I focus on myself, then I get really down, but if I start focusing on other people and how I can reach out to others who need help, it always makes me feel good and makes me forget about my problems. We will always have problems, but it's the WAY we look at them that makes a difference. Are we going to let our problems defeat us, or are we going to defeat them head on? I have a friend (going through a similar situation) and she said, " I decided I can go through this complaining the whole way, or I can go through it, with a different attitude, and enjoy life! I think that's pure wisdom.

6. Above all, my relationship with God is what makes me have hope in everything. If I didn't have Him to turn to, I'd have nothing. In the worst situation of my life, He has given me joy, strength, hope and peace! It's a "peace that passes ALL understanding." I really know what that means now. I've lived it, and nobody can take that away from me. I'm not saying it's fun, but I'm saying you will always have Him to depend on and provide for you. Trying to do right and not retaliate helps my heart to heal. May God bless you too.

Thrift Store Find # 4 - Crochet & Suede Lavender Poncho

I just wish you could see this poncho in person. The photos do not show the true beauty of the rayon thread. It has a beautiful shine and I'm sure you've seen similar crochet items with this thread in stores. I've looked for something similar for years and never found it until now.

I'm happy to say that my friend, Mona, at Creative Yarn Source (formerly Crochet Style, Etc) in Columbus, carries this kind of yarn / thread. I ordered some and it is just gorgeous. It comes in a hank, and if you're planning to wind it on a yarn swift, be very careful, since it's slippery and easy to get tangled. That happened to me and it was a mess. The thread is called La Abuela Rayon and comes in 66 beautiful colors!

The solid circles on this poncho are a soft suede, which makes this crochet item a unique find.

By the way, the wallpaper in the background (top photo) is from one of the bedrooms in my home, which is decorated in Victorian style. It makes me sad that I have to move, but I'll get to do more decorating where I'm going. Interior decorating is another one of my passions.

Another thread with high sheen that Mona carries is La Abuela Acetate, which has a high sheen and comes in 66 colors, as well. I had never heard of a "Penny Rug" before I saw this article on Colleen MacKinnon's craft blog. I LOVE the way her design turned out and it would be so easy to make! Looks kind of retro, don't you think?

I can just see this rug in lots of other colors to match any decor. I don't think she knits or crochets pieces to felt them, but you could either crochet your own fabric, felt it, and cut the circles, or you can buy wool sweaters at a thrift store and felt it before cutting out the shapes you want. She has another page on "How to cut circles" for the rug and other projects.

I've had many people ask me over the years how to go about getting their designs published. There are many questions on this subject, such as:

1. How do I go about sending a design proposal to a magazine.

2. If I submit a design to a magazine, how long should I expect it to take before the publisher responds?

3. What kinds of designs are publisher's looking for?

4. Pattern writing skills

5. Sketching and swatching your designs

6. How many hours a day do you work on your designing career?

7. If I look at another person's design and make something similar, is that considered my design?

8. Where do you get design inspiration?

9. Freelance Designing

10. Working for a yarn company

11. How do I write a book proposal?

12. How do I find a publisher?

13. Can I send a book proposal to more than one publisher at once?

14. How long does it take to do a book before it's released and on the market?

15. Do you do your own marketing?

16. Do you need to have an area of expertise in crochet to be a professional?

17. Info on hiring pattern testers, tech editors, and contract crocheters.

The list is endless. I could go on and on! I have responded to many emails over the past 6 years from people asking these same questions over and over. I decided to start writing a series of posts on this subject, so I can direct them here. Thank goodness, I've saved many of those emails! I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had other designers answering MY questions! I owe my success of getting started in this business to a small number of established designers. Two of those designers are Kristin Spurkland (gave the most info), and Margaret Hubert (a sweetheart who's been in the business since the 70's and still going strong!).

I did have one designer (whom I won't mention) tell me that I had not paid my dues enough to write a book! If I had listened to her, I would not be where I am. I had been crocheting for 36 yrs when I began thinking about doing a book (and had designs published in magazines), so I think I paid many years of dues. I believe if a person has only been crocheting for a day, and they come up with a book proposal idea (and have the skills) they don't need anyone's permission to do a book! That's just my thought on this. Don't allow anyone to discourage you. If you have a dream, and it's not going to hurt others (like neglecting your children or marriage) then go for it!

Lemon Yellow

I think this sweater is really pretty. I see many pastel colored crochet sweaters at the thrift store that just don't appeal to me, because I can't wear light colors. I used to do Color Analysis and I'm very picky about the colors I wear. Wearing the right colors makes your eyes sparkle, and tends to fade blemishes and dark circles. You just feel really good when you are wearing one of your colors.
Maybe I'll do a post on color analysis someday.

Creamy Corn Casserole - Recipe

The corn casserole I'm posting is probably one you may have been making for years, but the other day a friend of mine asked for the recipe. I was surprised because I thought everyone in the world had this recipe. She had never made it, so I thought I'd post it just in case someone else out there doesn't have the recipe. It is one of the easiest things to fix if you are in a hurry, and all you do is pour the ingredients into a bowl. You can make it like the original recipe says, but sometimes I'll add green chilies or a little chopped green pepper and sweet onions, to make it more like a Mexican dish. Cheese on top goes great with this version. (see photo below) This corn casserole goes well with any kind of food, and is great for company or a carry-in dinner. I usually double it for something like that.

Creamy Corn Casserole

Corn with green chiles or green pepper

Ingredients
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
2 eggs, beaten
1 (8 oz) package Jiffy corn muffin mix
1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, UNdrained
1 (14.75 ounce) can creamed corn
1 cup sour cream
Optional : shredded cheddar cheese for top
If you like green chili's (they're not hot) they go very good in this casserole if you want a change

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and lightly grease a 9x9 inch baking dish.
In a medium bowl, combine butter, eggs, corn bread mix, whole and creamed corn and sour cream. Spoon mixture into prepared dish.
Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the top is golden brown.

Upper Valley Fiber Fest 2011 - Dayton, Ohio May 21 & 22

My Crochet Designing Business Cards

If you are a designer, contract crocheter, or pattern tester, and you don't have business cards, you really should order yourself some professional looking ones. I made my own cards for 5 yrs,

and they looked pretty good (with a crochet background), but I decided to go ahead and spend a little extra money for professional cards. I really like the way these turned out, with all my info.

I ordered them from Vista Print where they have very good prices. You can either use one of their templates or customize your own like I did. I do love the look of the cards because there was room for the info I wanted, plus I was able to put photos of 2 of my books (one on front and one on back) Having the back printed cost a little extra, but I thought the price was very reasonable. What do you think? Scroll down to look at the back of my card.

The lovely Mihaela Vaduva is holding my # 2 thrift store find today. I immediately spied it in the store because of the colorful stripes and the fact it is in like new condition. I never buy anything at a thrift store unless it is in great condition.

The thrift stores we have around here (Dayton, Oh. area) are fabulous! In fact, I've heard more than once that we have the best thrift stores in the country!

I'm sure most of you have heard of Clark Howard, the well known consumer guru. He has a talk radio show on the air every evening. I listen to him a lot and he said when he comes to Dayton he goes to our thrift stores and that we have the best ones he's ever been to.

Our thrift stores are big, clean and carry only the best of items - never anything junky, torn or dingy. Most everything looks new. They are also known for the way things are organized to look like a regular store. I constantly find new items with the price tags still attached. For instance, I may find a sweater that has an original price tag of $78, and I'm buying it for $5 or less. Everything is color coordinated, with sizes separated, making it easy to find the size you're looking for.

One of my favorite stores has 2 half price tags 1/2 off every single day. Each price tag has a color, and when you come in the front door, you'll see a sign that shows 2 colors, like green and blue, as half price. Then the next week, the sign may show orange and yellow tags as 1/2 off. The beautiful and unique purses are organized and color coordinated along a huge wall, and you will find brands such as Vera Bradley, Dooney and Burke, Liz Claiborn, Burberry, etc. The shoes all look mostly new.

Another reason I know we have the best thrift stores is because my niece in Texas told me that a Dallas newspaper had a write up on thrift stores and how more and more people are taking advantage of saving money this way. The article stated, "Dayton, Ohio has the best thrift stores in America." That was exciting for me to hear.

So why don't you hop in a car (or plane) to come visit me and I'll take you around to all my favorite thrift stores! You'll see men in 3 piece suits, women who look like movie stars with huge diamond rings, and lots of expensive sports cars in the parking lot. Maybe we could even get a little crocheting done, and visit my local yarns shops :) If you are a thrift store enthusiast, let me know what you think of my thrift store finds! I have several more items to post.

TNNA Fashion Show - My "Little Black Dress" on the Runway (San Diego, Ca)

The YouTube video I'm posting is from the 2009 TNNA Fashion show in San Diego, California. My publisher (F+W) asked me to come there to do some book signings, and of course I was thrilled. But what was even more thrilling is that they wanted to feature my "Little Black Dress" from Crochet That Fits in the fashion show! I can't tell you how exciting this was for me. It was a time in my life that I needed a jump start to get back into designing, and of course I took advantage of this opportunity.

If you don't have time to watch the whole video, my dress comes out at about # 447. (it's after the model wearing the Fedora hat and the felted shawl)

My dress got the biggest applause of the show! I guess the knitters in the audience didn't know crochet could look like that. (not stiff and boxy) Hope you enjoy watching it!

The amazing thing about this fitted and flattering dress is that there are absolutely NO increases or decreases in the whole pattern, but the dress fits like a glove! Since the rows are vertical and worked side to side, you can add or delete rows, if the size you are following does not fit exactly the way you want it to.

This way, you can get a perfect custom fit. The stitches are worked in the back loop only (blo), making the dress not as thick and bulky as crochet can sometimes be. The pattern calls for a DK, # 3. medium worsted weight yarn, and the finished garment is lightweight, soft and drapable.

The dress is shaped without using increases or decreases, because of a method I came up with called the "Graduated Stitch Method". You work short and tall stitches on the same row to get the shaping. Don't let this intimidate you if you are a beginning crocheter. The skill level is actually labeled Advanced Beginner. It's very easy and all you have to do is know sc, hdc, dc, and trc. Watch the video now. (below) You can see the dress in the background here before the video starts.Once it starts, don't forget that the dress comes out when the video is about half way finished. The fashion show was much longer than this video. This shows only groups 5 - 8, but there were 90 garments shown in all!

Macaroon Brownies - Recipe

This yummy recipe has some of my favorite ingredients, which are chocolate, coconut and sweetened condensed milk. I bet adding pecans or chopped almonds would make it even better. I found the recipe at Kimmy's Kitchen here. She has lots of recipes posted that are from her mom's cookbook. What a wonderful thing to do for your children and grandchildren. They will really appreciate their favorite dishes, from when they were growing up, and especially when you are gone. I made my own cookbook once when I was a supervisor for Cookin' by House of Lloyd. It was a party plan like Pampered Chef. I compiled the cookbook to give to my hostesses. Maybe someday I'll post about it.

Thrift Store Finds # 1 - Ear Flap Hat

I want to say thanks to my model, the beautiful Romanian beauty, Mihaela Vaduva. She's my daughter's sister in law, who is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Actually, she's also my son's sister in law. Sound strange? Not really, after I explain it. My daughter, Jamie Hall, married Mihaela's brother, Virgil, 11
yrs ago, and then 3 yrs later, my son Brian Hall, married their sister, Anca Vaduva. So their kids are double first cousins.

Their parents are finally in the states now, along with the 2 sisters. It took many yrs for them to get their visas! Their sister, Ligia, had to go back to Bucharest to finish her last yr in collage and will be back to the US in July.

I couldn't have a better model to show off the stunning thrift store finds - in crochet! I found the Ear Flap hat for just 99 cents! When Mihaela tried it on she went crazy over it and of course, I told her she could have it. Isn't this a cute and unusual hat?

(see her bio below) and her new book, I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting Socks (Leisure Arts #5263)

Karen has authored several books and designs for crochet magazines as well. Even though she's been designing since 1998, I've just gotten to know her recently and love her bubbly, enthusiastic personality, which really shows through the book. She's passionate about her work and loves to share her experiences in crochet with her fans and anyone looking to learn new techniques.

I'm kind of embarrassed to say this, since I've been crocheting for 38+ years, but I have never made crochet socks! Now the cats out of the bag, but what a better way to reveal this fact than to tell you how excited I am to learn! I never really had a huge desire to make socks because I thought it would be boring and time consuming. Not! I found out that's not true at all and I owe my awareness of this to Karen. I've had so much fun working on my socks and it's been hard to even put them down! The fantastic new sock yarns that are available, with gorgeous color combinations, make it impossible to be bored! I was so wrong and now I'm addicted! You can stick this tiny project into your purse and take it anywhere. Thanks Karen for giving me the confidence I needed to start my very first sock project!

The minute I got my copy in the mail, I anxiously looked through it to find just the right pattern for me. Since I love lace, I had initially decided on the Lace Socks, but thought I'd better start at the beginning with one of the basic sock patterns. First of all, the book tells you how to measure your foot to get the perfect fit, followed by a Toe Up sock, and a Cuff Down sock. I played around a little with each one, and finally decided on the Toe Up sock. I don't have it completely finished, but want to show you a sneak peak of my very first sock! Karen's instructions are very clear and easy enough for an advanced beginner, but challenging enough if you are experienced at crocheting. I love the colors of the yarn I chose. It's ONline Supersock 100 in "Candy" color, which I bought at my local yarn shop, Fiberworks. It's sold here also.

Another helpful tool is that Karen has a section in the book on the best
fibers to use for socks (stretchability) and the best yarn weights. Since crochet is denser (thicker) than knitting, she has you use hooks that will make the sock nice enough so you can actually wear them in shoes!

1. Each part of the sock (toe, heel, cuff, foot, etc) is shown in different colors, making it very easy to understand. An example of this is in the photo at the right and below. I LOVE that feature and I'm sure you will too!

About the Author - Karen Whooley

Karen Whooley learned to crochet at age 7. She was taught by her Italian “Nonna” (Grandmother) and learned all the stitch names in Italian! Since Nonna didn’t know how to read patterns written in English, Karen had to teach herself.
Karen didn’t start her career as a designer until 1998. Up until that point she would follow patterns she bought in the store. If something didn’t work out to her satisfaction, she would modify it. Then in December of 1998, she met Terry Kimbrough through one of the many crochet lists on the Internet. Terry, who has always been one of Karen’s favorite designers, encouraged her to try her hand at designing something. Her first designs were Flower Dishcloths and to her amazement, Annie’s Attic liked them! From that point her career took off! When her design career started, Karen also opened the doors of Crochet Legacy. Crochet Legacy grew from just offering a few patterns, to including accessories, classes and workshops and a whole lot more. In 2004, Karen finally learned to knit. In January 2007, Crochet Legacy became KRW Knitwear Studio, to include her patterns in knit as well as crochet. Karen lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (Washington state) with her husband, David, of 20 years and her two children.

Trend Watch for Spring 2011 - Blue Hues

Spring is just around the corner and I'm anxious for pretty flowers and green leaves to start popping out here in the Dayton, Ohio area. Friday morning I woke up to snow on the ground, but by afternoon the sun was shining brightly and it was warm enough to throw off my winter coat. Later, I got an email from my brother in Fairhope, Alabama (20 miles across the bay from Mobile) saying it's beautiful there with azaleas and dogwoods in bloom. I'm really jealous and wish I could hop on a plane and go there right now. Today is another gorgeous day, and I thought I'd post this info about another color trend for spring - blue!

It's that time of year! I was awarded the Flamie award for "Best Crochet Pattern of the Year" in 2008 for my book, Crochet That Fits. I found out I had won while I was recuperating in the hospital after having emergency esophagus surgery. I was in the hospital for 16 days (March 09') and Mary Beth Temple had to interview me on "Getting Loopy", while I was on Morphine and in my hospital gown! I was a little nervous to be live on the air, while on medication, but was thrilled for the great honor. I believe my book won because of the new method I came up with that shows you how to make fitted, shaped, & flattering crochet garments and accessories without having to use any increases or decreases. I called it my Graduated Stitch Method. There are people all over the country (and world) writing me almost daily saying they made a garment for the first time ever and it was easy and fits perfectly. This is what the book is all about and it thrills me!

Recipe for No-Knead Bread

Like most people, I love bread, and you know how delicious it is just fresh out of the oven with a slab of real butter on it! Did I say slab? You get the idea :) I haven't personally baked bread in years. I guess one reason is the time it takes to make it, and worrying that it won't come out perfect. I subscribed to a newsletter at SWEET AS SUGAR COOKIES website, and every few days I've been opening up my email to mouth watering recipes. The bread recipe below is one of them and I want to share it with you. If you decide to make it, let me know how it turns out because I haven't been able to go to the store yet for the ingredients.

No-Knead Bread

Lisa from Sweet as Sugar Cookies says, "I have finally jumped on the no-knead bread wagon and am loving the ride. It's almost like magic how you can use so little yeast, leave the dough on your counter, and then wind up with a loaf of bread that looks like it came from a bakery. Crusty on the outside, moist and chewy on the inside, I guarantee you will fall in love with this bread. My family consumed slice after slice and then proceeded to "order" several more loaves from me. I feel like a bakery already."

No-Knead Bread

(from the New York Times)

1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/2 c. bread flour
1/4 tsp. yeast
1 1/4 tsp. salt
1 5/8 c. water
cornmeal

In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, and salt. Add the water and stir until blended; dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let dough rest at least 12 hours, preferably about 18, at warm room temperature, about 70 degrees.

Dough is ready when surface is dotted with bubbles. Lightly flour a work surface and place dough on it. Sprinkle with a little more flour and fold it over on itself once or twice. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rest about 15 min.

Using just enough flour to keep dough from sticking to work surface or to your fingers, gently and quickly shape dough into a ball. Generously coat a cotton towel (not terry cloth) with flour, wheat bran, or cornmeal; put dough seam side down on towel an dust with more flour, bran, or cornmeal. Cover with another cotton towel and let rise for 2 hours. When it is ready, dough will be more than double in size and will not readily spring back when poked with a finger.

At least a half-hour before dough is ready, heat oven to 400F. Put a 6-8 quart heavy covered pot or ceramic baking dish in oven as it heats. When dough is ready, carefully remove it from the oven. Slide your hand under the towel and turn dough over into pot, seam side up; it may look like a mess, but that is okay. Shake pan once or twice if dough is unevenly distributed; it will straighten out as it bakes. Cover with lid and bake 30 minutes, then remove lid and bake another 15-30 minutes, until loaf is beautifully browned. Cool on a rack.

7 Random things about me:

1) I grew up in the deep south in a family of 5 children. I'm the middle child and was super shy. I live in Ohio now, but have lived in Texas (where I was born), Tennessee, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. (where I graduated) I have been across the Pacific ocean twice and my parents were missionaries in the Philippines and Lima Peru when I was young. I was taught the first grade in Spanish and my teacher couldn't even speak English.

2) When I was growing up my sisters and I had a singing group and we got paid to perform at events weekly and had our own radio show. We sang Folk songs and were called the "Harmony Folk Singers". I have been performing solo for the past 30 yrs at festivals and fairs in a 3 state area. I sing songs of Karen Carpenter, Anne Murray, Amy Grant, Gloria Estafon, Linda Ronstadt, the Judds, Patsy Cline, and lots of others. I have a CD that will be for sale soon on my blog.

3) I manage a free clothing store that my church owns. It's huge and we give nice clothing away to around 1,000 individuals each year. I work there 1 day a week. In the past (before I started designing), I have been a Realtor, a supervisor for Christmas Around the World, and child care in my home, but the most important job was being a stay at home mom when my kids were growing up.

4) I have been crocheting for over 30 years and started designing professionally in 2005. I love it! I have authored Positively Crochet!, Crochet That Fits (voted "Best Crochet Pattern Book of 2008"), Crochet in Style and Crochet Young and Trendy. I also design for crochet magazines and some yarn companies. I love to cook and have a huge cookbook and crochet book collection.

5) I am a very positive person and try to look for the good in others. It's hard for me to be around negative people or people who complain constantly.

6) I was married for 38 years to the love of my life, until I found out one day that he was having an affair with another woman. This devastated me and it's been the worst time of my life. That was 3 yrs ago and I finally filed for divorce, which isn't final yet. I'm trying to live "one day at a time", and depend on God, friends and my family to get me through.

7) I have 3 grown children. They are: Brian (married to Anca from Romania), Jamie (married to Virgil, Anca's brother, from Romania), and Tracy (married to Ashley from Nashville).
They have given me 5 precious grandchildren! (Jade, (age 9) Chloe (age 7) Sophia (age 7) Coen (the only boy-age 4) and Amelie (age 16 months) They are double first cousins!

Just look at this sweet little baby face! I had to share the photo of little Amelie in her hat. She's my youngest granddaughter.(16 mos) I rarely have time to make things just for fun, and rarely use someone's else's patterns but I was looking for something quick to do and found this free pattern at the Lion Brand website. I made it a little big for her so she could wear it next winter also. It's called "Speed Hook Earflap Hat and Scarf Set"

Granny Square Clothing Trend - Fall 2011

Below are some of the fall fashions by House of Hollard. Since I design crochet, some of you may be shocked to know that I have never loved Granny Squares. Back in the 70's I did make my MIL a granny square sweater coat, and maybe you've done the same. I, myself, never wanted to wear an afghan. I learned to crochet back then but I have never liked really bright colors that are mismatched. Now if the colors are complimentary and easy on the eye, such as muted greens and plums, or even pastels, the granny squares wouldn't be so "in your face". I DO love black but would choose more pleasing colors if I were to make an outfit or granny square scarf. As I said 5 years ago, I believe that crochet is "here to stay". If granny squares are making a comeback, then nothing will stop it!

A Designer's Sketches

If you have dreams of becoming a designer, another tip would be to work on drawing your sketches. If you answer a "call for submissions" from a publisher or editor of a book, they'll want either a sketch or photo of the finished design. I've heard editors at conferences say that you don't have to be an artist to sketch your designs, as long as they are neat and basically look like what you have in your head. If you think your drawing is not good enough, ask a friend who can draw well. Even though I think I do pretty well with my sketches, sometimes I ask my daughter who is an artist, to do them for me. Below are some samples of my sketches. I'm showing the "before" and "after". (sketch and finished design) Some Jamie did too.

Description that was in my Book Proposal
This runway inspired scarf could be made for a girl or an adult. The one (left) in the 06' Fall runway collection comes almost to the floor, but it can be made in any length. Most helmet type hats have the flaps on the side, but I am putting flowers there instead. The runway version is knitted. My scarf will have a chain link, open stitch pattern, and flowers all over, which will be placed on the outside after the scarf /hat is finished. This scarf will have flowers attached to the ends instead of fringe. This could be done in any color combination. The scarf is attached to the cap, and can be wrapped around the neck or hang down.

Work in Progress - Tote Bag

I started this bag almost a year ago but had to put it down to work on other things. You know how that is :) I wanted to design a tote bag that is big enough to carry my crochet projects. (books also) If you are familiar with my books or me as a designer, you already know that some of my favorite color combinations are pinks, greens, plums, wines and purples. I adore that color palette, and am always drawn to yarn in those colors. Since my stash has lots of my favorite colors, I decided to make the bag in worsted weight, as well as some novelty yarns. I wanted to make this bag fun, and one that would get a lot of attention, so I decided to make handles with large beads in the same colors as the bag. I'm still looking for more beads. I have to give my friend, Melody Kelly, the credit for this inspiration. She made a similar bag in her colors, but she also had bought a dark purple, crochet bag with beautiful, colorful beaded handles at Cracker Barrel. You know what wonderful gifts they have! (unique and one of a kind) I just had to have one of my own! As soon as I finish the bag I will have the pattern up for sale. Hope you enjoy it.
